September 11 - October 27, 2007 Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower September 18, 2007
Donald Friedman's new book, published by Mid-list Press and distributed by Random House, presents artistic works, paintings, drawings, and sculptures, created by renowned writers, such as Josef Èapek, Jean Cocteau, E. E. Cummings, Annie Dillard, Lawrence Durrell, Jules Feiffer, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Kahlil Gibran, Allen Ginsberg, and William Butler Yeats. The original artistic works, from private collections, have been gathered and displayed, on multiple floors and spaces, at the elegant Anita Shapolsky Gallery on Manhattan's East Side. More than 120 works by 80 renowned writers draw the visitor in, from Lawrence Durrell's 1957 watercolor portrait, "Justine!!!", to Clifford Odets' 1947 watercolor folk landscape, "Coming Snow".
Friedman's massive and fascinating book is quite reasonable, at $40.00, and can be purchased right at the Gallery, after viewing the original art. The Anita Shaplosky Gallery is housed in a stunning townhouse, and I recommend visiting the Gallery soon, as the exhibit closes on October 27, 2007. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
I walked home, totally across town to the West Side, and stopped at Tony May's San Domenico NY for a Cosmopolitan with Renato, the sophisticated bartender. This was the perfect finish to a lovely evening.
