Patelson Music House, founded by Joseph Patelson in 1947, tonight presented another live music event. Tonight’s jazz musicians, The Mad Jazz Hatters, included River Alexander on vocals, guitar, chromatic harmonica, and jaw harp, Jeff Hudgins on alto saxophone and clarinet, Ralph Hamperian on bass, and Jonathan Royce on percussion and slide whistle. The program was vibrant, eclectic, and mood-shifting, with smooth, elegant music for traditional and standards, as well as Irish tunes and Jugband. River Alexander effortlessly switches from guitar and vocals to harmonica or jaw harp. Alexander’s vocals have an authentic resonance, well suited to this genre. Jeff Hudgins shifted with ease from sax to clarinet, and Jonathan Royce added great rhythmic effects with percussion and slide whistle. The Patelson fans were thrilled with this return engagement.

The Patelson guests also browsed the eclectic sheet music collection of Broadway melodies, classical sonatas, and jazz standards. This was, as always, a complimentary Open House, hosted by Marsha Patelson, and staff was on hand to help serve wine, cheese, and hors d’oeuvres.
The next Patelson Jazz events, part of the Wine Wednesday series, are October 17, 2007, with Project Taming Sari, a fusion of jazz and rock, and November 14, 2007, with junk “Kat” & Modiano, a funky, junk jazz. This complimentary evening begins at 5:30 PM and lasts until 7:30 PM. Stop by Joseph Patelson Music House, 160 West 56th Street, across from the Carnegie Hall stage door, and tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
