Feinstein’s at Loews Regency is an elegant Club, named for its Proprietor, the renowned musical artist, Michael Feinstein. There’s a fine dinner menu, and wines are listed for “old world” and “new world” reds and whites, champagnes and sparkling wines. I sat next to Julie Wilson for this set, a real honor, and we chatted before the show. For tonight’s second show, Late Night Jazz: The Daryl Sherman Trio, Ms. Sherman was joined by Houston Person on sax and Jennifer Leitham on bass, both pros with captivating stage presence. Ms. Sherman was vibrantly dressed in a deep pink blouse, black skirt, and polka dot heels, and she entertained her fans from the piano and center stage. Her constant repartee with Mr. Person was witty and sassy, pleasing the crowd to no end. Ms. Leitham was more restrained, but her spotlight turn showed seasoned mastery of solo bass rhythm, in “I Can't Give You Anything But Love” (Jimmy McHugh/Dorothy Fields).
Also among tonight’s tunes, were “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me” (Duke Ellington/Bob Russell) and “Get Out Of Town” (Cole Porter). In the latter, Ms. Sherman’s lovely vocal introduction was followed by an engaging piano-sax duo. “Too Late Now” ( Burton Lane/Alan Jay Lerner) from the film, “Royal Wedding”, with Fred Astaire and Jane Powell, brought Ms. Sherman center stage, as she told the audience about her London tour the week before this year’s real royal wedding, and how she longed to be called to perform. Ms. Leitham was featured in a rambunctious “This Can’t Be Love” (Richard Rodgers / Lorenz Hart), that she had originally performed with Mel Tormé, and Mr. Person’s sax solo was during “Polka Dots And Moonbeams” ( Johnny Burke/Jimmy Van Heusen). The photo below shows Ms. Sherman’s stunning polka dot heels that match the song.
Throughout this late night show, a casual, but classy mood was set. When Ms. Sherman asked the audience for tropical animal sounds during her wild rendition of her own composition, “Tropical Belt”, she surprisingly got more than expected. With Mr. Person’s smooth, soaring sax, Ms. Leitham’s rich, refined bass, and Ms. Sherman’s luscious retro sound, combined with a contemporary motif, everyone, including the Trio, had a great time.
