Every once in awhile, the renowned lawyers of the NYC Bar Association entertain each other with invited friends at the House of the Association, an imposing and grandiose building filled with marble, an enormous Great Hall, and portraits of justices and judges. Tonight’s entertainment was an engaging play, written by Myron D. Cohen, a Senior Counsel with show business credentials. The music was composed by Peter W. Dizozza, an attorney who moonlights as a pianist and composer, and Martha Cohen Stine, a family law attorney who sings light opera. Other featured actors include an eclectic ensemble of lawyers, a civil litigator, and a justice of New York State Supreme Court.
Before and after the show, Tyrone Mark Powell bent over the baby grand, playing standards with professional expertise. “A Killing on Broadway” had these featured actors walking on and off the make-shift stage, with Stage “assistants” walking by with cue cards, for the audience to set time and place. The plot revolves around an old Broadway musical, whose copyright is stolen, and the play is currently produced to great success. The owner of the copyright and the copyright thief settle for $1 million. But, when the cash settlement is delivered at 3 AM in Schubert Alley, a murder takes place.
There are many legal jokes, “The sheepskin comes with a hunting license”, and the jokes take life, as the complicated plot (that lawyers love) unfolds, with a defendant’s lawyer being just the man, who would most like him to go to jail, and with the wives of the play’s lawyers seducing and being seduced behind their husbands’ briefcases. Hon. Robert D. Lippmann plays a judge, perhaps in his own robe, and Peter Dizozza keeps the lively theme tightly wound to the action onstage.
Myron Cohen, as Richard Gordon, the original playwright, has seasoned stage presence and strong vocal power, and Trey Sandusky, as his “friend” and attorney, Raymond Weiss, seemed to enjoy every minute of this campy creation. Sarah Jo Hamilton, as Gordon’s wife, Katie, who had “stuck by her man” in spite of his shenanigans, seemed no stranger to the stage, and Nancy D. Zehner, as Weiss’ wife, Marion, was persuasive as a bored and restless spouse. There must have been at least a few divorce attorneys onstage and off, as the marital themes played well to this crowd. Kevin J. Nolan performed his “film noir” role with ease, as did Larry Mentz, as Harry Shapiro, the emotional, but persistent detective.
