Today I finally got to share a leisurely and lovely brunch with Gregory Jbara, a hot commodity on today's Broadway stage, who came prepared with his actual TONY Award. Gregory won the Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and TONY awards for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, for the 2008-2009 Broadway season, for his role as Billy Elliot's Dad. I had met Gregory at the various Drama Desk Award events, this past spring, and we had planned this brunch conversation for quite some time. Since Gregory's recent celebrated success, he had been so busy, that we waited for today, and we were rewarded with a bright, sunny Sunday, for Terrace in the Sky's magnificent wrap-around views of Manhattan and beyond.
We mostly talked about Gregory's experience with this production, that stars three different Billys, all young and talented, with each performing in cyclical schedules. So, Gregory was the onstage father to three young men, now four, David Alvarez, Tommy Batchelor, Alex Ko, and Trent Kowalik. He works with a marvelous cast, and he stays in shape as a seasoned dancer and athlete. Gregory originally studied dance with Anna Sokolow and graduated from Juilliard. Gregory's family remained in California, so his two young sons could attend an excellent charter school. He credits his wife as the glue holding up the hearth in the Los Angeles region of California, and, when Gregory won his awards, he proudly brought his wife, Julie, to the stage with him.
Gregory has an expansive film, theatre, and television background, but now new horizons beckon his imagination. He's exploring numerous inviting opportunities in the film studios of Los Angeles and the television studios of New York, plus new Broadway shows would be wise to cast Gregory in another magnetic lead. He exudes energy, charm, and charisma, and he's impassioned about the theatre. A real trooper. Gregory and I dined on three magnificently prepared courses, and the brunch photos are below. Terrace in the Sky is the quintessential destination for social or corporate events, or a Sunday brunch or evening get-together for two. Terrace in the Sky serves festive Holiday dinners, and I suggest reserving your table with a view early, as these dinners are always popular for New Yorkers and visiting guests.
