The National Arts Club hosted a panel and reception, in collaboration with St. George’s Society of New York and the Drama Desk Awards. An elegant wine and hors d-oeuvres table was enjoyed by the guests, as they conversed and had a chance to see one of the many art exhibits that The National Arts Club presents on an ongoing basis. The building is elegant, housing antiques, period furniture, and classical paintings. I began the evening touring the Club and meeting some of the guests, who were members of The Drama Desk and St. George’s Society.

The Moderator of the Panel was Margot Astrachan, Assoc. Producer, Drama Desk Awards, owner of Margot Astrachan Productions, and a board member of St. George’s Society, NY. The Panel included Montego Glover, star of Memphis and a Drama Desk Award Winner, Margaret Colin, star of Arcadia, Arian Moayed, star of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Carl Forsman, Artistic Director, Keen Company, Vivienne Benesch, star of Benefactors, a production of the Keen Company, Stephen Barker Turner, also a star of Benefactors, Isa Goldberg, President, The Drama Desk, and Robert R. Blume, Executive Producer, Drama Desk Awards.

Vivienne Benesch and Stephen Barker Turner performed a scene from the British playwright, Michael Frayn’s Benefactors, in their roles as Jane and Colin. The scene takes place in London around a table, so the setting was well suited. They and Carl Forsman discussed the play, the psychology of the roles, and the challenges of mounting small theatre company plays in this economy. Vivienne Benesch is also an Artistic Director of Chautauqua Theatre Company. Margaret Colin talked about her tight costume and British accent for Arcadia, Tom Stoppard’s play that’s set in Sidley Park in the English countryside.

Arian Moayed shared what it’s like to rehearse with Robin Williams for their upcoming Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and Montego Glover, who’s enjoying the long run of the hugely successful Memphis, was, as always, humorous and warm, as she related stories about her career and the making of this show. She used the term “incubate”, as she described the re-writes and out of town trials, as Memphis took shape. Isa Goldberg, President of The Drama Desk, and Robert R. Blume, Executive Producer of the Drama Desk Awards, both shared information about the upcoming 56th annual Drama Desk Awards, which will be televised on the Ovation channel. Margot Astrachan was quite dynamic in her role, with well-prepared questions that drew out engaging conversation and audience follow-up.
