Today’s Sardi’s lunch panel was superbly entertaining, with Robin Milling as Moderator, and Jim Belushi, Stephen Kunken, John Laroquette, John Leguizamo, Maxwell Caulfield, Dan Lauria, and Annabella Sciorra relating stories about backstage and onstage mishaps. These actors have been seen on large and small screens, as well as live stage, and their collective anecdotes kept the conversation vibrant and vivacious. Ms. Milling, a renowned interviewer, drew her panel out with perfected timing.
John Leguizamo, now in Ghetto Klown, and Maxwell Caulfield, now in Cactus Flower, talked about the difference between television taping and live stage performing, where you have to prove yourself every night, moment to moment, even in the presence of buzzing flies. Jim Belushi, now in Born Yesterday, mentioned a wardrobe malfunction of the worst order, while Mr. Leguizamo told a story about a missing stage prop, when he was in American Buffalo. Mr. Belushi added comments about the dressers tying his shoes. Dan Lauria, now in Lombardi, studied his character through football footage and whatever he could find.
The panel referred to the audience as a live organism, an inspiration, the energy in the theatre. They also talked about the magic made every night, that’s always fresh, never to be the same. The role of theatre owners, wanting stars in the cast for outsized ticket sales, was thrown around like a ball on fire. The other members of the panel, John Larroquette, Stephen Kunken, and Annabella Sciorra, related interesting experiences as they’ve shifted from Hollywood to Broadway. I look forward to more illuminating lunch panels like today’s. This cast was bright and animated, kudos to all.
