William Wolf, Drama Desk President, and his Annual Awards event team, listed above, planned an adventurous and richly entertaining evening with renowned guests and speakers. The evening began at a closed VIP party at Hawaiian Tropic Zone, with an Open Bar and hors d’oeuvres. Drama Desk attendees and guests then rode the Gray Line NY Sightseeing double-decker buses to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, where nominees and guests were greeted with a long red carpet. Awards were presented by Andrea Martin, Michael Berresse, Elizabeth Ashley, Julie White, Bill Pullman, William Wolf, Laura Benanti and Leigh Ann Larkin, [title of show], Laurence Fishburne, Harvey Fierstein, Marisa Tomei, John Cullum, Kelli O’Hara, Patti LuPone, Priscilla Lopez, and Jim Dale. The Drama Desk Awards support ongoing theatrical development and are the only critics’ awards that compete Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway shows in the same categories.
The [title of show] ensemble provided a huge amount of humor and song, while an onstage band provided jazzy interludes, as Award recipients took the stage. James Earl Jones accepted a Drama Desk Special Award from William Wolf, and this larger than life actor mentioned learning something new every night in his current role in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Edward Albee also received a Special Award, and he spoke about his hope to continue writing plays long after his current 80th birthday. Theatrical students won scholarships, and Outstanding Ensemble Awards were given to the casts of The Dining Room and The Homecoming. Two NYC theatre companies won Special Awards, 59E59 and Playwrights Horizons, both highly regarded in the theatre community, and both housing several theatrical spaces, for a wide annual repertory. The new revival of South Pacific won five Awards; August: Osage County, Gypsy, and Passing Strange all won three Awards each; and Boeing-Boeing, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Sunday in the Park with George, and The 39 Steps each won two Awards. Patti LuPone (Gypsy), Paul Szot (South Pacific), Deanna Dunagan (August: Osage County), and Mark Rylance (Boeing-Boeing) each won Best Actor/Actress Awards; Laurence Fishburne won an Outstanding Solo Performance Award for Thurgood; The 39 Steps won a Unique Theatrical Experience Award; and Forbidden Broadway: Rude Awakening won the Outstanding Revue Award.
Following the Awards presentations and show, many of the guests again climbed into the large red Gray Line NY Sightseeing buses for the trip to John’s Pizzeria, where a lively and relaxed After-Party ensued. Kudos to all the nominees and winners, and kudos to William Wolf and his 53rd Annual Drama Desk Awards team.
