Panel:
Moderator, Elysa Gardner, USA Today
Bill Irwin, in Waiting for Godot
Marcia Gay Harden, in God of Carnage
Geoffrey Rush, in Exit the King
Annie Baker, Playwright, Body Awareness
Condola Rashad, Sophie in Ruined

Once again, the Drama Desk, and its President, William Wolf, invited members to an engaging and enjoyable lunch panel, this time at Sardiís, the renowned theatrical dinner destination. Todayís panel included Moderator, Elysa Gardner, of USA Today, Bill Irwin, co-starring in Waiting for Godot, Marcia Gay Harden, co-starring in God of Carnage, Geoffrey Rush, co-starring in Exit the King, Condola Rashad, co-starring in Ruined, and Annie Baker, who wrote Body Awareness. Each panel member spoke individually, and then as a conversational ensemble, taking questions from the Moderator, and then from Drama Desk members and guests, with special assistance from William Wolf.

Geoffrey Rush spoke about the escape value for audiences of theatrical experiences, of the fragility of the world. He mentioned playwright Ionesco and the creation of psychological abyss. He said we can laugh at our own foibles, our own hypocrisies. Later he mentioned the value of special diets, sleep and energy, and physical therapy, as well, as he dances and prances about as Berenger at least once every day. Marcia Gay Harden spoke about being dramatically truthful to the enactment of pain, about the nature of extreme emotions. She later espoused on the shaping of character through subtext, for added detail.

Annie Baker spoke about the importance of language and a sense of comedy. Condola Rashad said her honesty of emotion resonated fully with students in the crowd. She explained that Ruined is a play about African culture, just as is Exit the King, in which evil is about to die. Bill Irwin discussed his background in mime and his onstage relationship with his co-stars, Nathan Lane, John Goodman, and John Glover. This Drama Desk lunch panel discussion was formed as a tribute to ďThe Impressive Number of Plays in 2008-2009Ē. Iím already looking forward to our next Drama Desk lunch panel and reception.
