This CD is contemporary Brazil, with mixed themes of dissonant and harmonious melodies, combined with exotic percussion and vocals, and varying tracks, from ethereal to electric. Dave Pietro is joined by some of the most renowned musicians in the Brazilian Jazz genre, like Duduka Da Fonseca, Helio Alves, and Nilson Matta. The ensemble is eclectic, and they team in differing combinations, from one to nine artists at a time on each track.
Notable Tracks:
#5 – Canto Triste - Composed by Edu Lobo and Vinicius de Moraes. Pete McCann’s acoustic guitar introduces Dave Pietro on soulful C melody sax, before Nilson Matta, Duduka Da Fonseca, and David Berkman join in. The sound is sultry, sensual, and seamless. Pietro adds a bit of contemporary dissonance, but in an uncluttered fashion, and he clearly plays the lead.
#8 – Remembrance - Composed by Dave Pietro. Valtinho Anastacio opens with authentic whistles, à la Rio, and Nilson Matta has a lovely solo, early in the track. An ensemble of brass – soprano sax, flugelhorn, clarinet, and trombone – fuse in harmony, before David Berkman and Duduka Da Fonseca present a dynamic duo, piano and drums, that end with the clarinet in an upbeat swirl that drives the rhythm.
#12 - Embrace - Composed by Dave Pietro. This title track of nine musicians, including Scott Wendholt on trumpet and Tom Christensen on alto flute, presents an exceptional passage that also features Pete McGuiness on trombone and Pietro on soprano sax. Pete McCann’s guitar solo is scintillating, and Anastacio’s vocals add textured effects.
#13 - Choro Bandido - Composed by Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque. This was one of my favorite tracks, a simple duo, Helio Alves on piano and Dave Pietro on C melody sax. The music is introspective, nurturing, and softly blended in tone.
