(See a Book Review of Marrying Mozart).

Patelson Music House, founded by Joseph Patelson in 1947, tonight presented its second Book Reading and Signing event, with Stephanie Cowell reading and signing Marrying Mozart, a delightful and detailed novel about the infatuations and marriage of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the intrigues between Constanze Weber, his eventual and adored wife, her family, and their influence on his music. Stephanie Cowell drew a large and attentive crowd to this classy event, and she sent some comments below.

Stephanie Cowell - “Reading parts of my novel Marrying Mozart at Patelson Music House was a magical experience. I first went there at the age of twelve, many years ago, to buy my first Mozart score – Le Nozze di Figaro, which I still have. It still seems the very same to me, the music bins and shelves and pictures. It represented the heart of music to me then as it does now. I swear I felt the ghost of my young, eager self, entering the doors for the first time. We had about as big a crowd for the reading as the music store can hold.”

“I read several sections of my novel, which centers around Mozart in his early twenties and the four musical Weber sisters, one of whom he eventually married. I read scenes of his composing, and the girls, and his confrontational scene with the Archbishop of Salzburg, and letters from and to the two younger sisters Constanze and Sophie, discussing whether Constanze should marry Mozart. Many people asked interesting questions and stayed after to speak with me. Probably 10-15 people came from the online group Classical Music Meet-Up. Wine and sorbet were great! A lovely evening!”

You can check your local bookstores and national book purchasing websites to order your own copy of Marrying Mozart.

The Patelson Jazz guests were one again treated to wines from 67 Wine & Spirits, plus Wine Cellar Sorbets, with a few sorbets featured tonight for a surprise variety. Patelson guests browsed sheet music collections and the new Patelson Gift Boutique, stocked for birthdays and presents for yourself. This was, as always, a complimentary Open House, hosted by Marsha Patelson, and staff was on hand to help serve cheese and hors d’oeuvres.

The next Patelson monthly event, part of the Wine Wednesday series, will also be Co-Hosted by 67 Wine & Spirits and Wine Cellar Sorbets, with choice red and white wines poured throughout the evening, plus a new wine sorbet. The date is February 13, 2008, with the return of the Kerry Linder Trio. The complimentary evenings begin at 5:30 PM and last until 7:30 PM. Stop by Joseph Patelson Music House, 160 West 56th Street, across from the Carnegie Hall stage door, and tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
