This is a very exciting CD of fused, contemporary Tango with classical overtones, hinting of Shostakovich, Ravel, Pugliese, among other traditional Russian, French, and Argentinean composers. It is searing, sensual, and serendipitous. I envisioned Tango and Modern dance, as well as the historical film, Ballet Mécanique, by Fernand Leger, on Track #1.
#1 – De ahora en más -- Composed by Fernando Otero. This piece races in repetitive and dissonant trills, almost like a cubist painting. Thus, the visual image of the film, Ballet Mécanique. Danielson’s violin and Segev’s cello are extremely edgy, pushing the envelope for contemporary Tango/Jazz or new music. This music is decidedly different.
#3 –Música del circo– Composed by Fernando Otero. With the addition of Ryan Keberle’s trombone, symphonic qualities emerge. This piece is led by del Curto’s bandoneón as it develops into a skipping, upbeat tune. It is a whirling dervish of music, powerful and pulsating.
#6 – You must believe in spring -- Composed by Michel Legrand and Jacques Demy. A romantic ballad, this piece opens with a blissful duet of bandoneón and Otero’s piano. Giraudo’s bass blankets the song with warm and nurturing tones. On a cold winter day, this piece is most welcome.
#7 – Oración --Composed by Fernando Otero. With the inclusion of Jonathan Coleridge Powell’s trumpet and Keberle’s trombone, this mournful and sorrowful piece reminds one of the tragic overtones of traditional Tangos.
