First in a series of fashion-related art: This exhibition includes 40 drawings of sumi brush ink, which is a technique introduced to Japan from China. The sumi brush is a subjective way of expressing the artist’s inner feelings, as it is so supple and agile. The tones of ink express emotions, with delicate, dry washes to bold, black strokes. Mr. Watanabe places a seal on his works. (Gallery Notes).
These drawings exemplify Mr. Watanabe’s haute couture store, Koji Atelier” in Ginza, Tokyo. Mr. Watanabe’s father was a high-class, men’s designer tailor, and the son studies fashion design in London and Paris. In 1972 he opened his own store, Koji Atelier, with Mr. Jean-Paul Dunand. In 1991 Mr. Watanabe presented a garment to HRH the Prince Royal. In 1998 Mr. Watanabe held a show for Chinese celebrities in Beijing, and in 2002 Mr. Watanabe celebrated Koji Atelier’s 30th Anniversary. ((Gallery Notes).
