May 30, 2004 This afternoon I had the pleasure of being escorted by Journalist "First" Class Richard M. Wolff of the US Navy through three warships that were docked on the Hudson River for Fleet Week 2004. I have always loved Fleet Week. The Sailors and Naval officers are so friendly, and they fill the visitors with pride in the excellence of the US Navy and its warships and equipment, so polished and well cared for. I saw updated helicopters, tanks, and trucks, all aboard these massive warships, including equipment for amphibious assaults. The hovercraft were aboard the USS Iwo Jima, an amphibious assault ship and use a cushion of air to stay above sea or ground and insert Marines from the ship onto a beach. The USS Anzio is a Naval "Guided Missile" Cruiser. The USS Mahan is a "destroyer".
The military personnel aboard the USS Iwo Jima were Naval security and Marines. The US Coast Guard and additional Naval security were actively protecting the River, and the flags flew with brilliance on this sunny Sunday. My guide, Richard Wolff, is completing a degree in journalism and already is certified in graphic arts and web design. He is positioned for a very extensive and successful career, having already received numerous awards and Naval commendations. The following photos include members of the Coast Guard and US Navy.
