A high point of my winter season has been Eric Slayton’s New York Underground Fitness, a brand new state of the art fitness center in the Holiday Inn on West 57th Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues. Eric is a specialist in nutrition and body building, as well as sports therapy and other individual fitness needs. He even sells pre- and post- workout protein drinks and snacks. New York Underground Fitness has a bevy of brand new equipment, freshly painted walls and ceilings, TV screens near the cardio-exercise machines, and, most importantly, a group of personal trainers, all certified and specializing in individual physical/psychical improvement.

For a few weeks, I worked with one trainer, Donny Schreier, and we built my stamina with free weights, a few machines, and nutrition/sleep advice (much needed for an all-night workaholic, such as I). Donny worked on shoulder muscles, back strength, chest pulls, leg lifts, abdominal lifts and more. For one week we worked together four times, and the following 2 weeks, one day each. Donny even called me at night to check on my “curfew” program. Donny Schreier is one example of the multitude of superb trainers found at Eric Slayton’s gym.

Eric has a free water cooler, fresh towels, a safe, clean dressing and storage area, one for men and one for women, and Eric is almost always at the gym, himself, working out, training his own clients, or meticulously picking up equipment. The gym is spotless, organized (free weights are neatly lined up on holders, by size and weight), and very private. Nobody bothers you, and nobody looks over your shoulder to check your progress, except your trainer. I like the treadmill, and I’m now at level 11, like walking up a hill, for one half-hour, at 3.3 mph, so I burn 275 calories, while watching TV and listening to Fruko!

Eric just painted inspirational sayings on the gym ceiling, such as “TRAIN SMARTER NOT HARDER” and “COMMIT YOURSELF TO CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT”. Call Eric Slayton at 212.957.4781, and make an appointment for a reference for personal training and a tour of the gym. Eric has pleasant, knowledgeable assistants, who are most helpful and professional. Enjoy the workout, and be sure to tell Eric you saw New York Underground Fitness on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
