Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower April 11, 2005 This Chicago-based pianist has composed all songs on his 2000 CD. Ryan Cohan is a talented jazz artist, generous with the stage, as his musicians are many, and they often lead and highlight various tracks. The music merges straight-ahead, contemplative, and always interesting sound with innovative effects.
Notable tracks:
#3 – Looking Glass Prelude – Composed by Ryan Cohan. This solo piano introduction to the longer composition, below, is introspective and melancholy. There is an abstract and ominous quality, occasionally dissonant and often disquieting.
#4 – Looking Glass – Composed by Ryan Cohan. This internalized composition seamlessly leads with piano (to absorb the introduction above), before trumpet, flugelhorn, tenor sax, flute, bass, and drums enter in a jazz melody that transports the listener with pleasant passages and keyboard creations.
#7 – Here and Now – Composed by Ryan Cohan. Cohan’s piano lead hints of a ballad, as his orchestra (tenor sax, flute, soprano sax, trumpet, flugelhorn, bass, and drums) swells, adding fluttering flourishes of flute and sax. There is poignancy and contrast as this piece develops.
#8 – White Sand – Composed by Ryan Cohan. Trumpet, bass, and sax lead this Samba-influenced piece, including decided dance rhythms. The soprano sax soars over the orchestra, later followed by Ryan Cohan’s playful keys.
