Adiel Shmit on Cello, Taisiya Pushkar on Piano, Boris Feiner on Piano
Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower May 8, 2005 This CD introduces an astounding array of new talent in a collection of delicate and daring live performances. Adiel Shmit, from Israel, is an up and coming cellist in the international music scene, and his partner, Taisiya Pushkar, generates equally fresh talent in her piano accompaniment.
Notable tracks:
#4 – Vocalise – Composed by S. Rachmaninoff for cello and piano. This interpretation of Vocalise, for cello and piano, reveals the poignancy of the work, which has served as a ballet score. Varying levels of volume and emotion are prevalent, with the final note fading into eternity.
#5 – Fantasy 2001 – Composed by Oded Zehavi for cello and three singers. This piece for vocals and cello has deep spiritual intonations. The interconnection of voice and cello creates a fantasy of violins in the overlay of sound.
#6 – Tenero 1995 – Composed by Mark Kopytman for cello solo. This work, with its dynamic and sharp entrance, leads to abstract and contemporary passages with fragmented, fingering effects. Adiel Shmit is able to draw surprising tones that emerge in new ways at the edge of his bow.
#7-10 – Sonata Op. 40 – Composed by D. Shostakovich for cello and piano. This complex Sonata for cello and piano expresses a complimentary musical conversation in the first movement, followed by sharp, rapid passages with Russian inflections in the second. The third movement offers a deep cello entrance, followed by raindrops of piano effects against the windier cello themes. The final, fourth movement is introduced with staccato cello in symbiosis with the slower, piano passages.
