A Photo Documentary
Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower August 20, 2005
This is not a detailed and technically researched documentary, but, rather, a mental and visual reflection of a wonderful trip.
For quite some time, I have been thinking about sailing on the Shearwater, an 82 foot sailing yacht, built as a Maine schooner in 1929. The interior is exquisite red wood, and the exterior is white with two masts. I arrived for the designated two-hour, Sunset Sail, armed with quite a recent experience, a one-week journey up the coast of Maine on Victory Chimes, in the Maine Windjammer Fleet.
This trip was much closer to home, and the inclement weather reports were thankfully wrong, as the clouds disappeared as the sail began. Captain Matt Beck logged the guests in, and wine was immediately served. What struck me right away was the sense of privacy, in spite of the small crowd. Each person’s or couple’s space was respected, and no announcements or loudspeaker intruded on the elegance and breathtaking views.
My guests tonight were Gwen Calvier, President of Hot House, a jazz magazine, and her nephew, Alan, visiting from France. Captain Beck sailed near the Statue of Liberty, for a variety of evening views, near Ellis Island, and around New York Harbor, near the Water Taxi, the Staten Island Ferry, and an ensemble of pleasure and commercial motorboats. The breezes were luxurious, and the guests were immediately relaxed. Gwen and I took a peek at the interior cabins, and we loved the quality, early American décor.
I recommend calling 212.619.0907 for a sailing reservation in September and another in October. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com. Also, for casual, after-sail dining or drinks, go to Mustang Sally’s at 324 Seventh Avenue, NYC, between 28th and 29th Streets, 212.695.3806, and tell them, as well, that you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
