This CD is a cultural extravaganza of a French song in English and French, a Brazilian song in English and scat, a Spanish song in English and Spanish, a Finnish song in Finnish, and American standards in sultry English with a Finnish accent and occasional scat twist. The band on sax, piano, bass, and drums has just the right mix of solos and instrumental combinations to add scintillating sound and rhythm to this very relaxing and nurturing recording.
#5 –Besame Mucho – Composed by Consuelo Velasquez. Sung in English and Spanish, with an element of emotion, this standard breathes deeply and is evocative of a slow rumba. Ms. Laiti uses her band well, as they enhance the vocals, never overpowering her lyrics or final notes.
#7 –Ranskalaiset Korot – Composed by Erik Lindstrom. Ms. Laiti is most comfortable in this song, sung in native Finnish, and I’d love to hear her in an entire Finnish CD like this track. Houston Person adds persuasive sax solos in between plus echoing notes throughout the theme. A bit of whistling is an endearing final surprise.
#8 –La Vie en Rose – Composed by M. David, Louiguy, E. Piaf. This track, with one of my favorite standards, is sung mostly in English, with soft piano and drums in the background. The vocals take the entire theme, with Larry Ham in duo on keyboard.
#12 –What a Little Moonlight Can Do – Composed by Harry Woods. Leon Lee Dorsy on drums and Vince Ector on bass lead this rapid-paced jazz, with Larry Ham adding consistent piano flourishes. This is a strong track, with generous instrumental passages that showcase piano, bass, and drums.
