As a child, growing up in suburban Boston, I used to stay with my family at the New Yorker Hotel for winter vacations and Broadway shows, Chinatown, shopping, and the annual visit to the Empire State Building, almost just across the street. The New Yorker Hotel has always had special memories for me and for my family, but tonight I was celebrating the special memories of people who used to sing at the New Yorker, people who used to manage the New Yorker, and people who currently keep the New Yorker as a showcase hotel for tourists and diplomats, athletes and business executives.
Tonight the New Yorker threw itself an extravagant VIP reception in honor of the re-lighting of a two-story sign that had been dark since 1967. According to the New Yorker's press release, "The new sign, which uses the same kind of LED technology employed on the giant television screens of Times Square, will use just 15 percent of the electricity that a neon sign would consume. The new sign – one of the largest LED signs in the world – was designed with painstaking attention to detail, and will be as bright as the original 1930s sign."
Tom McCaffrey, Director, Marketing & Sales, and Kevin H. Smith, Executive VP and General Manager, as well as Dr. Charles Yang, President, New Yorker Hotel Management Company, were instrumental in the organization and coordination of this momentous occasion. Now the New York skyline has another jewel shining, and the lights on the Hudson have extra colors and sparkle. Photos below of the 75th Anniversary VIP Reception exemplify the festivities and mood. When you're planning a week or a weekend on the town, whether for business or leisure or both, check New Yorker's website above for rates and availablity. Then, you, too, can be part of New Yorker's 75th Anniversary Season.
