Program:

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)

Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 9
Moderato-Allegro Moderato
Quasi Variazione
Allegro Risoluto

Piano Trio in G minor, Op. Posth.
Lento Lugubre

This performance is described again in the Tavros CD review of the same musicians performing the same two Trios, except, in this case, the piano is a Bösendorfer. The Russian-born, Yulia (also known as Yulia) Sakharova, violinist, the Icelandic-born, Margrét Arnadóttir, cellist, and the Korean-born, Yung Wook Yoo, pianist, performing on the renowned Bösendorfer, are young virtuosos, who are able to enhance the genre of Artist Salon to a quintessentially textured chamber music experience.

The heart-rending theme of the first movement of Trio in D minor (written by the young Rachmaninoff at the time of his champion, Tchaikovsky’s, death in 1893 and performed by the composer with cello and violin accompaniment in 1894) is led by the cello. In this case, Ms. Arnadóttir elicited just the right depth of feeling and tonal angst. Mr. Wook Yoo played the more rapid, similar theme, followed by Ms. Sakharova on vivacious violin. This first movement is rapturous and resonant, mournful and melancholy. When six falling notes repeat in tragic proportion, Ms. Sakharova’s violin exudes seamless sensuality.

The second movement is initiated in with a poignantly slow cello and more rapidly paced piano, overtaking the theme from a frenzied violin. The third and final movement finds a fluttering violin and smooth cello, amidst rippling piano. At this moment I was acutely aware of the rare sound and technical advantage of the Bösendorfer, as Mr. Wook Yoo played lightning-fast notes that were individually clear and melodic. There was no after-sound of the pedal effects or the lower registers. The Bösendorfer was the fourth star performer of this Salon. It maintained its ability to generate pure music, despite whispering softness or bursting volume, be it in whispering softness or bursting volume..

The Trio in G minor (composed by Rachmaninoff, while still at the Conservatory) re-visits the fluttering styled string performance, building to dramatic tension. Mr. Wook Yoo performs with confidence and poise, and the music elicited is noteworthy and quite promising. Ms. Sakharova’s Guarneri del Gesù had a deep, edgy quality, and she, too, performs with rapturous connection. Ms. Arnadóttir has a calm demeanor, while she draws intensely interesting sound through her cello bow. The encore was the Scherzo movement from Mendelssohn’s Trio No. 1, and the playful staccatos were balletic, like spinning pirouettes.

A reception followed with Austrian wines and a selection of European cheeses.
