Rizzoli Bookstore creates and presents numerous special events throughout each month, many of which are designed for the authors of new Rizzoli and other publications to sign copies of books and meet Rizzoli's guests. Today's elegant book signing event, in the upstairs atrium of Rizzoli's renowned 57th Street Bookstore, was for the new publication of Isabella Rossellini's new Schirmer-Mosel publication, a tribute to her father, Roberto Rossellini, the renowned film director. Isabella Rossellini's mother, Ingrid Bergman, was married to Rossellini from 1950 to 1957, and Isabella was one of three children born from that marriage.
Of course, Ms. Rossellini is renowned for her ten year spokesmodeling of Lancome beauty products and perfumes. She now has a line of fragrances in her own name. The book comes with a DVD, My Dad Is 100 years Old, a short film about Roberto Rossellini, directed by Guy Maddin, produced by Jody Shapiro, and written by Ms. Rossellini. I bought my own copy of the book, signed to me by Ms. Rossellini, who is just as charming in person as she is on screen. The texts, illustrations, and photographs in the book are by Ingrid Bergman, Roberto Rossellini, Francois Truffaut, Guy Maddin, Jody Shapiro, and Isabella Rossellini.
Ms. Rossellini's new publication is divided into five sections, with stories and photos of her famous family, a discussion of the enclosed biographical film, copies of letters between her parents, quotes by Federico Fellini, an interview of Rossellini, the director, by colleagues, Truffaut and Eric Rohmer, and a chronology of family milestones and her father's films. Intersperced throughout are surreal photos and childlike drawings, enhancing this retrospective of her father's filmatic genre and her own innate creativity.
