This is not a detailed and technically researched documentary, but, rather, a mental and visual reflection of a wonderful trip.

For my third delightful sail on the restored and elegant Shearwater yacht, built in 1929, I chose a moonlight evening cruise, with “day after full moon” sailing. The weather and timing were perfect for a pre-sail stroll on the boardwalk of Battery Park. As it happened, September 8, 2006 was a Pre-9/11 night, with the two full blue memorial beams reaching to the stars, from the base of Ground Zero. On this very clear, full moon night, with a rapid current and strong breeze, the owner and Captain of Shearwater, Tom, as well as Captain Matt, shared the steering of the boat, while the entire Shearwater crew managed the hoisting and lowering of sails with complicated rigging.

It was a gorgeous sail, accompanied by champagne or wine of choice. The crew is warm and helpful, and the mood is romantic and restful. This is a two-hour evening excursion that feels like a mini-vacation.
