I recently enjoyed lunch at Jack's busy bar, chatting with Liam, Bartender, native Irish, like the owners, manager, and staff. The tomato-vegetable soup was just like my mother used to make (in New England), hearty and fresh. The tuna sashimi was perfect sushi grade, and the seaweed and rice blended well with this delicious display. Liam and I traded stories about our mothers' kitchens.

The busy bar lunch was such a treat, I returned the next day to host Tom McCaffrey of New Yorker Hotel for lunch in the dining room, and the wooden booths allowed for comfort and conversation. Tom had a grilled steak sandwich, with cheddar and chili. I was treated to the succulent steamed salmon with steamed fresh vegetables (all in layered bamboo) and ginger sauce. And, we both drank lots of diet coke, as we caught up on business and current events. The New Yorker Hotel is undergoing a major renovation, on the heels of its 75th Anniversary celebration, and Tom is in a leadership role, during this exciting transition.

Less than two weeks later, I returned for Saturday brunch, to meet a friend from Long Island (Jack's is not far from Penn. Station) for a pre-theatre get-together. Jack's is also in the heart of the theatre district, and we were going to see Wasps in Bed at the Beckett Theatre on West 42nd Street. My friend ordered the penne with chicken and cream sauce, plus fresh fried mozzarella with marinara sauce and banana sorbet. I ordered goat cheese omelet with arugula and mushrooms, plus ceasar salad and melon sorbet. Also included in the $19.95 incredible fixed brunch price was a choice of drinks, and we both chose fresh orange mimosas.

When in the theatre district, at 42nd Street films, or Holiday shopping, visit Jack's on West 40th Street, between 7th Avenue and Broadway, and ask for Larry. Tell him you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
