Tom McCaffrey, The New Yorker Hotel's Director of Marketing and Sales, kindly led me on a fascinating tour of the total renovation and restoration of this 77 year-old famed hotel, which can accomodate well over 1,000 visitors/night. The re-decoration involves 100 rooms at a time, out of 911, starting this April 2007 and ending in the summer of 2008. The guest rooms that I visited included flat screen TV's, 1930's styled lamps and linens, cushioned easy chairs, and superb views, clear East and South, including the Statue of Liberty. I also visited guest rooms in the process of construction. Some of the Tower Suites and balcony rooms will be the most sought after overnight accomodations in the City.

In the grand lobby, The New Yoker Hotel will replace the antique Austrian crystal chandeliers with contemporary-styled chandeliers, using the exact same crystals. The lobby walls will extend to the windows, removing some small shops and setting up in-lobby shopping with a new line of products. As it happens, I know first hand that The New Yorker's black umbrella is the sturdiest and most fashionable around. Stop by The New Yorker Hotel and check out the fine lobby in progress. Soon the colorful carpeting will be removed to expose glorious marble floors, hidden for ever so long. Also, the lobby restaurants will be renovated, and The New Yorker Hotel will reign as royalty in midtown Manhattan.
