Tonight Gerhard Feldmann and Lisa L. Feldmann, President and EVP at Bösendorfer New York, hosted the March Spring 2007 event in the second year of their jazz series, titled “All that Jazz”. Benny Powell, from New Orleans, played for 12 years (1951-1963) with the Count Basie Orchestra, and performed with a variety of bands and orchestras, since 1963, including the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, The Merv Griffin Show, and Randy Weston’s bands. TK Blue (Talib Kibwe), born in the West Indies, was raised on Long Island. “Kibwe” toured with the renowned pianist, Abdullah Ibrahim, and then lived in Paris, 1981-1989. His early band toured Africa and later, back in the US, he performed with Randy Weston’s band. TK regularly records with jazz musicians, such as Eric Reed and Randy Brecker.
Sayuri Goto, born in Japan, has played piano since the age of four. She studied jazz piano at the New School University and Manhattan School of Music, as well as privately with numerous jazz pianists, such as Andy Ezrin. Sayuri performs with Benny Powell’s quintet and the George Gee Big Band, plus she joined the Off-Broadway show, Monk, in 2005. Sayuri has graced the stages of Birdland, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and Blue Note, while performing with the likes of Earl May, Carla Cook, TK Blue, and Darryl Hall. Tonight this trio played new, original works from various recording and event projects, such as Night Never End, by Sayuri, a ballad joined by flute and trombone, I Tried and Tried, written by one of Benny Powell’s wives, with a lovely and lilting trombone theme, and A Single Tear of Remembrance, by TK, with the flute effervescent and magical in its soulfulness.
Sayuri showed the sold-out Bösendorfer fans what these pianos can really do, as she played solos that showcased the Bösendorfer’s resilience and richness of sound. Sayuri generated mesmerizing echoes of contrasting melodies that brought a hush to the showroom. TK’s Caribbean Express, a Calypso tribute to his West Indies heritage, was led by the composer on saxophone with increasing dynamism. When TK switched keys, tuneful intonations fused with the piano and trombone. Benny offered his own tribute, one to New Orleans, with a rollicking, jazzy, down-home motif, very, very French Quarter in rhythm and musicality. A wine and cheese reception followed with an edible fruit arrangement, courtesy of Roberta and Edible Arrangements, West 38th Street, NYC, followed by warm socializing.
