This collection of seven original compositions introduces a versatile performer, Howard Leshaw, on tenor sax. Leshaw also plays flute and clarinet. The music flows with the genre of dance, such as swing, bossa nova, and samba, while serious, sophisticated jazz ensues. The infusion of exotic percussion and other moody introductions draws the listener in.
All compositions by Howard Leshaw.
#2 – Sirirat – A bossa nova beat exudes sensuality with dance influenced rhythms. Most importantly, this composition brings Howard Leshaw on sultry tenor sax, leading Jon Davis on piano, Paul Gabrielson on bass, and Dean Rickard on drums in combined and showcased textures and tonalities.
#5 – Buckle’s Waltz – With a meandering, mellow motif, Leshaw hands the lead to Gabrielson on bass, who effectively extends and elongates the theme. Over the bass improvisation, Leshaw reinvents his solo with soulful meanderings on tenor sax.
#6 - Siempre Lulú - Surreal percussion leads to driven drums, South of the Border style. The quartet peps up the recording with this intensified, contemporary track.
#7 - Shadow Song - This title track changes motif dramatically with a foggy sax interlude like morning at sea. This composition is noteworthy for complex musical concepts with mature style and inventive originality.
