Patelson Music House, founded by Joseph Patelson in 1947, tonight presented its third live music event, with Bernard Rose & Company, playing standards and Dixieland, with the accomplished Bernard Rose on saxophone, flute, and clarinet, accompanied by Pete Chivaly on bass and Nick Russo on guitar and banjo. Each musician took a solo, and there were featured duos as well. Bernard was the music announcer and raconteur, while Marsha Patelson, owner of Patelson Music House, welcomed the guests. She was warm and gracious in her remarks, recalling 40 years in this eclectic and historical shop for classical and jazz sheet music and books.
Marsha sat in with the trio, on cello, for Somewhere, from The Wizard of Oz. Bernard also introduced and led a tribute on clarinet to the memory of a young man, also named Bernard Rose, who perished in the Holocaust. Marsha Patelson played cello in this work, as well, and her performance was poignant. The piece is called Oifn Pripitchik, by M. Warshawsky, and it had Kletzmer intonations. Another tribute, to an event guest and a colleague of Bernard, Rick Bogart, who has also been reviewed in this magazine, and whose CD was reviewed as well, included a New Orleans medley. Bernard and his band played Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, and Sweet Georgia Brown. Nick Russo was virtuosic on banjo, and earlier played guitar with enthusiasm and elegance. Pete Chivaly took buoyant bass solos that captivated the crowd, and Bernard Rose, more than ever, played bravura solos on clarinet, as well as flute and sax. Other music included slow ballads and swing standards.
This was again a complimentary Open House, hosted by Marsha Patelson, and staff was on hand to help serve wine, cheese, and turkey wraps. All catering was prepared by Ernest Klein & Company International Supermarket on Avenue of the Americas at 55th Street (212.245.7720). Raffle winners won generous Patelson store certificates, as well as a music calendar. In addition, Salon Ziba, hair salon of New York celebrities and New York clientele, donated a generous salon certificate for hairstyling or spa services.
Patelson Music House was packed with fans, and more guests arrived each few minutes. The music was lively, continuous, and performed with professional zeal. The next Patelson Jazz event, part of the Wine Wednesday series, is May 16, 2007, with the Bernard Rose & Company trio in performance once again. The complimentary evening begins at 6:00 PM and lasts until 8:00 PM. Stop by Joseph Patelson Music House, 160 West 56th Street, across from the Carnegie Hall stage door, and tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
