This recent CD brings Steve Johnson on vocals in a number of Sinatra tunes, like Angel Eyes, One for My Baby, and It Was a Very Good Year. The band is especially bright in some instrumental arrangements, like a jazzy take on the Beethoven favorite, Fur Elise.
Notable Tracks:
#3 – Little Sunflower - Composed by F. Hubbard. This pleasant instrumental track has Latin infusion and tropical ambiance. Mike Wiens is featured on intro guitar, and Mike Cross brings a full orchestral sound to his versatile keyboards. Steve Boggio adds exotic percussion alongside a steady beat, and Terry Copley keeps the rhythms steady.
#4 – Slow Down Jimmy - Composed by T. Copley, M. Wienz, R. Holler. With spoken and musical vocals, this track adds humor and rambunctious style. It’s a rapid swing, with a cute story, and the entire band gets in on the fun.
#7 - Killer Joe - Composed by B. Golson and Q. Jones. This smooth track has the four instrumentalists in jazz motif, with Mike Wiens featured nicely. Steve Boggio and Terry Copley add infectious rhythms, while Mike Cross keeps the keyboard chords interesting, with a piano roll here and there..
#14 - Fur Elise - Composed by Beethoven. This original arrangement is entertaining and engaging, with the renowned Beethoven Fur Elise in jazz mode. The band plays the refrain in different musical motifs, showing full respect for the composer’s theme.
