Martha Mayer Erlebacher Paintings
Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower December 9, 2003 Erlebacher "paints poems about the origin and nature of life itself". She looks at myths and allegories as inspiration for her works that are intense and psychological. She paints luminous subjects against very dark backgrounds, with simple objects, such as a shell, a pot, and the human body of a woman or several women. Erlebacher distills the deepest of emotions into visual experiences, emotions of lust, hunger, horror, and beauty. (Gallery Notes).
I found Erlebacher's works to be sensual, spiritual, and surprising. The vision of a single, shiny conch shell on a dark wooden table was mesmerizing and reminiscent of some of Georgia O'Keefe's more symbolic themes and motifs. The visions of mangoes, lemons, and melon had elements of natural purity and folk art. "Three Cats at Dusk", with three nude women in horizontal choreography against a blazing sunset, seemed to invoke mythology of women springing forth from the earth. The paintings of Martha Mayer Erlebacher have depth, detail, and character. I would like to see more of her work in the future.
