Eric Fischl's Krefeld Project: Studies
An Exhibition of Color Photographs
Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower December 9, 2003 In 2002 Eric Fischl collaborated with the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, Germany, which was originally designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1928 to be a private home, and which now houses changing exhibitions. Fischl inhabited this refurnished "home" during three days, in which hired models pretended to be a couple that lived there. Two thousand photographs were taken by Fischl and then digitally reworked, in order to create future paintings of this experience. The installation of 12 large photographs on view at Mary Boone Gallery for this exhibit coincide with the actual paintings being installed at the Museum Haus Esters. (Gallery Notes).
Some of the digitally reworked photographs were much too graphic for this journal. Those seen below represent the essence of Fischl's experience. The photographs on view are provocative, natural, and indicative of a very relaxed and avant garde experience for the models and photographer. Fischl conceived this project, which is descriptive and daring.
