For today’s matinee of New York City Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I was joined by Camille, my five year-old niece, and her mother, Madeline. We began the day at the New York City Ballet Studios in the Samuel B. & David Rose Building. In a rehearsal studio, numerous young ballerina-wannabes and one danseur noble-wannabe listened to Tiler Peck, a City Ballet Soloist, plus teachers from City Ballet’s Education Department and students from School of American Ballet, discuss what it’s like to be a ballet dancer. Then the children participated in organized ballet exercises, some light aerobics, and the movement and gesture of little butterflies, which they would soon see in today’s matinee. The 45-minute Workshop also included donning pink butterfly wings, with a head-piece for the young man. This Workshop was extremely well-planned, as the children divided into three groups for large muscle movement. The simple choreography was expanded for the entire children’s “ensemble”, with each group having its own choreographic motif. I was quite impressed, and so was Camille. The Workshop leaders also allowed the children to take home their butterfly wings.
