I was joined tonight at Mustang Sally's by Marcia De La Garza, the newly appointed Executive Director of the New York International Ballet Competition (NYIBC), and her publicist, Audrey Ross. Ms. De La Garza told me about the upcoming Gala Benefit for the Competition on March 22, 2011, at Skirball Center at NYU. This Gala, a Tribute to the late Ilona Copen, Founder and longtime Executive Director, will also honor Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride, as they will receive the first Ilona Copen Award, presented by Virginia Johnson, Artistic Director of Dance Theater of Harlem. The voting for this Award is done by the Competition's Artistic Board, an esteemed list of ballet luminaries, including Julio Bocca and Violette Verdy.
Ms. De La Garza, from Mexico, is a warm, sparkling woman, with boundless enthusiasm for the Competition. She had an internship in Vancouver, Canada, in conjunction with her degree in arts administration. She was not a career dancer, but did study jazz and classical dance in Mexico, before focusing on the leadership of dance organizations. When completing advanced programs at Columbia University, Ms. De La Garza lived in an apartment in Ilona Copen's West Side brownstone and soon became enchanted by the Competition. Ms. De La Garza spoke about her excitement about this year's Gala performers, who are from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (Matthew Rushing), American Ballet Theatre (Jose Manuel Carreño), Dance Theatre of Harlem (Flavia Garcia and DaVon Doane), Joffrey Ballet (Victoria Jaiani and Temur Suluashvili), Limon Dance Company (Roxane D'Orleans Juste), New Jersey Ballet (Junio Teixeira and Ana Luiza Luizi) and North Carolina Dance Theatre (Alessandra Ball and Abdul Manzano).
At Mustang Sally's cozy booth, Mike, the Manager, stopped by, and we dined on Grilled Salmon, a Toasted Turkey Reuben, and Steamed Vegetable Dumplings. After dinner and conversation, I showed Ms. De La Garza Mustang Sally's party spaces, and we stopped to chat with Niall Conroy, Proprietor of Mustang Sally's, as well as Mustang Harry's, Seven, and Jack's. Then I walked to the Joyce Theater, nearby, for a dance performance. Mustang Sally's is also close to Madison Square Garden, the Fashion and Fur Districts, Fashion Institute of Technology, and Penn Station. Call 212.695.3806, and ask for a cozy booth. Also, be sure to reserve your Gala Ballet tickets for March 22, 2011, at Skirball Center.
