For today’s New York City Ballet matinee, Peter Martin's captivating Swan Lake, set to the renowned and luscious Tschaikovsky score, I was joined by Camille, my practically eight-year-old niece, and her mother, Madeline. We began the day at the New York City Ballet Studios in the Samuel B. & David Rose Building. In a rehearsal studio, numerous young ballerina and danseur-wannabes learned the story of Swan Lake from Glenn Keenan, a City Ballet Apprentice Ballet Master, and Meghan Kent, Moderator of today’s Workshop and Manager of Outreach Programs. They were both attentive to children's questions and answers and kept the plot line simple and dramatic. Ms. Keenan and Ms. Kent were assisted by Ashley Hod and Gabrielle Estep, both students at the School of American Ballet. They gave the little ballerinas white or black sheer tutus, as they divided into white or black swans. The little male danseurs received orange capes, to become little Von Rotbarts, the evil sorcerer in this story ballet.

Then the children participated in organized ballet exercises, some light aerobics, and the movement and gesture of Swan Lake,, such as undulating wings, covering their faces, and fluttering about on tiptoe. The Von Rotbarts learned to leap into the scene and wave their magic capes. Robert Chausow, NYC Ballet violinist in the Orchestra, was today’s musical artist, and he created sumptuous sound and musical imagery. The children, ages 4-7 (there are also City Ballet Workshops for ages 8-12), were divided into white swan and black swan ensembles, then practiced some choreography, modeled by Glenn Keenan. Ashley also led the black swans, while Gabrielle led the white swans. All the participants could take home their tutus and capes.

After the Workshop we attended the gorgeous matinee. Camille wore her white swan tutu, leotard, and ballet slippers throughout the day. I highly recommend bringing your youthful ballerinas and young danseurs to New York City Ballet’s upcoming Workshops, listed on the New York City Ballet Children’s Workshop Web Page. You can also bring your 8-12 year-olds to the In Motion: Workshop & Performance Pairing. And don’t forget to reserve your tickets for the same day’s matinee, always featured in the Workshop design.
