On a blazing hot Saturday afternoon, there's only one place to be, if you're in New York, and that's on the Shearwater, sailing out into New York Harbor, with refreshing breezes and a cold soda, beer, or wine, with no sounds except the buoys and the splashing waves. Today's excursion was a special three-hour cruise to catch a close view of all four NYC Waterfalls on display through October 13, 2008.
The NYC Waterfalls were designed by Olafur Eliasson and launched on June 26, 2008 by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, Public Art Fund President Susan K. Freedman, and the artist, Mr. Eliasson, who is from Copenhagen. The four man-made waterfalls are located: on the Brooklyn anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge; on the Brooklyn Piers, between Piers 4 and 5 near the Brooklyn Heights Promenade; in Lower Manhattan at Pier 35 north of the Manhattan Bridge; and on the north shore of Governors Island. The concept includes protection of water quality and aquatic life. They will flow from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, except Tuesdays and Thursdays, when they will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. And, they will be lit after sunset until 10 p.m. (See NYC Press Release).
Once we had viewed the four waterfalls, the Shearwater crew hoisted the double sails and turned off the motor, for a relaxing two-hour sail, in the midst of a very busy New York Harbor, with the Circle Line, Spirit Cruise, Water Taxis, Staten Island Ferries, smaller sailboats, private yachts and motor boats, tug boats with barges, jet skiis, police boats, and even the Caribbean Princess cruise ship entering the Harbor. There were helicopters overhead, and I realized that each Captain, like our Captain Dave, had to be extremely focused and experienced, in order to navigate in this popular Harbor. In fact, Captain Dave even consulted a guidebook to check the currents at the start of our sail. The Shearwater crew is exceptionally warm and professional, and a young guest was invited to have a turn at the helm.
Call the Shearwater office at 212.619.0907, and reserve space for you and your friends on their Afternoon, Sunset, Moonlight, Brunch, or NYC Waterfalls Sails. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
