It was a misty, cloudy night, and Bateaux New York, an elegant all-glass dining vessel, was filled with guests eager to see the NYC Waterfalls by night, as well as the New York Harbor sights, gliding all the while in smooth, silky style. Many of the Bateaux New York guests are from international cities and towns, and I was seated next to a honeymoon couple from Italy: she was Italian, and he was French. During the course of the evening, I conversed a bit with this couple, en français, and when it was time to debark, about 10:30 PM, the skies had opened to torrential rains and thunder, and we shared a cab to our respective, midtown destinations. The summer rain added to the drama of the evening.
The ambiance on Bateaux New York is attentive, and Jonathan and Isaac kept watch over my belongings, when I dashed to the outer deck for photo-opportunities. Jonathan even ventured outside to let me know when various courses had arrived at my table. To begin the dinner, a complimentary champagne was served, followed by a Reisling, plus my Herb Chevre Parfait with Eggplant Confit. My entree was Miso Glazed Wild Alaska Salmon, with Soy Beans, Coconut Rice, and Bok Choy, and my dessert was a Vanilla Crème Brûlée, with a crispy glaze. Between courses, the guests travel back and forth to the outer deck, and we could see the Statue of Liberty, cruising sailboats and ferries, a tugboat and barge, various bridges and skyline views, a surprise fireworks display, and the sought after NYC Waterfalls by night.
The NYC Waterfalls were designed by Olafur Eliasson and launched on June 26, 2008 by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, Public Art Fund President Susan K. Freedman, and the artist, Mr. Eliasson, who is from Copenhagen. The four man-made waterfalls are located: on the Brooklyn anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge; on the Brooklyn Piers, between Piers 4 and 5 near the Brooklyn Heights Promenade; in Lower Manhattan at Pier 35 north of the Manhattan Bridge; and on the north shore of Governors Island. The concept includes protection of water quality and aquatic life. They will flow from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, except Tuesdays and Thursdays, when they will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. And, they will be lit after sunset until 10 p.m. (See NYC Press Release).
A three-piece band and vocalist entertained the guests with ballads and contemporary songs, for listening and dancing. You should call 866.399.8439 to make a lunch or dinner reservation on Bateaux New York, while the NYC Waterfalls flow freely by day and night. You can even charter Bateaux New York for semi-private or private events, like corporate retreats or unique weddings. Bateaux New York is docked midtown, at Chelsea Piers, for easy travel.
