My seven year-old niece, Camille, and her mother, Madeline, drove early to the City to join me for the Shearwater's Sunday champagne brunch. We had plans for a Broadway show later on, and the timing of an 11 AM - 1 PM sail was perfect. There wasn't a cloud in the sky this warm July day, and humidity was low, perfect for sailing breezes. The Shearwater staff unrolled a brunch buffet, that began with a tea and coffee service and open bar. Camille chose cranberry juice, Madeline had iced tea, and I ordered a mimosa. Two courses of assorted muffins, homemade breads and cakes, bagels, salmon, and assorted meats and cheeses were spread out under a huge white awning-styled sail. The 1929, 82' yacht, sailing from North Cove Marina, was bustling with local New Yorkers and tourists from around the globe.
The wind filled the tall sails swiftly, and we slid through New York Harbor's waves easily. Camille and I headed back to see Captain David at the yacht wheel, peering at boat traffic, as a large cruise ship, Staten Island Ferries, and Circle Line boats passed by in the waters near lower Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty stood proudly in the Harbor, as the Brunch was enjoyed by the leisurely crowd. Captain David let Camille take the wheel for a moment, to experience the pleasure and power, and he also showed her how to use her new compass. At one point I brought Camille downstairs to see the living quarters, and when she's older she might just charter this yacht.
After the sail, we toured the World Financial Center lobby, then stopped at Ciao Bella ice cream parlor. North Cove Marina is adjoined by a leafy park with picnic tables, a cool respite from the sun. Call the Shearwater office at 212.619.0907, and reserve space for you and your friends on their Sunday Champagne Brunch Sail or any of their other sails, like Afternoon, Sunset, or City Lights. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
