After a full day of ballet with my soon to be eight year-old niece, Camille, including a Workshop at New York City Ballet, their Swan Lake matinee, and an afternoon of trying on ballet-wear at Ronnie Marshall's Onstage Dancewear on Madison Avenue, we all headed to the Empire State Building, so close to Onstage Dancewear. After a casual birthday dinner at Heartland Brewery, within the Empire State Building, we headed up to the 86th Floor Observatory. Camille was still wearing her pink ballet slippers and her Body Wrappers mint with pink trim leotard, which she had just chosen at Onstage Dancewear.

The wind was only blowing mildly on the south side, the air was cool and comfortable, and the views were extraordinary. Camille had never been to the top of the Observatory when the lights were on, as our last visit was almost three years ago, in the winter's daytime. This was a transporting and magnificent experience for all of us. Although I live in Manhattan, I sometimes visit the Empire State Building Observatory on my own, just to be up there with the 360 degree view of Manhattan, the waterways, the boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island, Statue of Liberty, the boats and ferries, and so much more. As this was a Saturday night, we were even serenaded by a saxophone player for bluesy mood enhancement.

I highly recommend visiting the Empire State Building, especially at night, for the memorable, mesmerizing views. They're open till the wee hours, past midnight, so it's never too late. Click Here to find tickets!
