For a Pre-July 4 visit to view New York Harbor, I chose a full moon late evening cruise aboard the elegant Shearwater Classic Schooner. The Shearwater was built in Maine and launched in 1929. It's extremely stable and comfortable, and the crew keeps the sails high to catch wind on breezy nights. Tonight's weather and timing were perfect for a pre-sail dinner at PJ Clarke's, from which I was greeted by quacking ducks and a cold Chardonnay.
The World Financial Center is on its way to near completion, and the interior lights were magnificent to behold. The entire North Cove Marina, where Shearwater is docked, is illuminated for strolling, dining, and taking photos. On this cloudy, but full moon night, with a rapid current and breeze, the Captain steered the schooner, while the Shearwater crew managed the hoisting and lowering of sails masterfully.
It was a gorgeous sail, accompanied by wine of choice. The crew is warm and helpful, and the mood is relaxed and restful. This is a ninety-minute evening excursion that feels like a mini-vacation.
