My five year-old niece, Camille, was in town with her mother, for the Rockettes at Radio City, Museum of Modern Art, and the Empire State Building Observatory, 86th Floor. The 102nd Floor Observatory is closed for renovation, and the 86th Floor is surely high, especially through Camille's attentive eyes. She had been initially apprehensive about this excursion, but as soon as she met our warm Welcome Guide, Julia, she was eager to see the views. The Empire State Building is immaculately presented, with Guards in formal, burgundy uniforms, bright Holiday decor, and a polished steel and marble, Art Deco Lobby. At the Fifth Avenue entrance, the back wall displays an image of the Empire State Building against a map of the Empire State.
The Visitors' Center offers narratives about the historical construction of the Empire State Building, and there's also an Audio Tour by Tony, a real New Yorker, plus a variety of exhibits. Our tour was timed for late afternoon, just before and as the lights starting coming on. We moved through the open-air promenade of the 86th Floor Observatory, looking at the rivers, Rockefeller Center (which Camille was first to notice, with gliding ice skaters), helicopters, flying pigeons, the Chrysler Building, the United Nations, and even New Jersey in the distance. It was a hazy day, about to rain, but the views were still stunning.
At the gift shop, we found an Empire State Building Teddy Bear and chocolates with photos of New York. As children grow more mature, the Empire State Building can be built into Social Studies and Writing Curriculum, with its fascinating panoramas and history. Camille's next trip to the Empire State Building will be at night, so all the lights will be turned on!
