On a balmy, breezy, and clear end of summer night, I took Gray Line New York’s new “Statue by Night” tour, departing at 6:00 PM and returning at 9:00 PM. Our double-decker red bus left Times Square, Eighth Avenue, conveniently located near the Gray Line New York Sightseeing Visitors Center. Our tour guide was jovial and full of New York stories, as we headed downtown on the West Side of Manhattan. He pointed out the highlights of the Broadway theater district, such as the discount ticket booths and public viewing stands at TKTS, plus famous shops and shows. We passed pedestrian malls, the newly constructed New York Times building, Bryant Park, the Flatiron Building, and the High Line, with its old rail yards, new park, and public event spaces. We then toured lower Manhattan, and passed what was Ground Zero and what will be One World Trade Center, with its Freedom Tower. On our way to South Street Seaport, for the New York Water Taxi, we traveled through Downtown Manhattan, past the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and the view of three bridges: Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and Williamsburg Bridge.
Once we arrived at South Street Seaport, those wishing to stop to dine, shop, or cruise on the New York Water Taxi disembarked. The double-decker bus then traveled with its remaining visitors, filling with additional Gray Line New York guests, at various spots throughout Downtown and Midtown, as it traveled the Downtown Loop back to Times Square. I easily found the New York Water Taxi booth and was greeted by three smiling ladies, two in the booth, and one an off-duty cruise guide, who leads special Harbor Experience tours in Mandarin Chinese and English, for bilingual guests. The New York Water Taxi tour lasted just a half-hour, but it traveled adventurously fast (which I loved) toward the Statue of Liberty. The Water Taxi guide was warm, witty, and again full of more New York stories. He even helped guests take self-photos near the Statue. A full moon was absorbed by a brilliant sky at sunset, and dusk approached, as well, all during this 30-minte ride. On the boat, we saw a clipper ship, sail boats, ferries, cruise boats, and helicopters overhead. In the silhouetted sunset, Ellis Island looked regal, and Lady Liberty looked splendid.
The boat docked in Brooklyn, where I and a few other Gray Line New York guests boarded a different red double-decker bus for the return trip to Times Square. Our new tour guide was low-key, happily, allowing time to reflect and observe. He was knowledgeable about Brooklyn, and, even in the now dark sky, we saw Atlantic Avenue antique shops, Italian restaurants, and State office buildings, before crossing over into Downtown Manhattan and Chinatown, the Financial District, and soon Macy’s and Herald Square. We arrived back in Times Square just as the crowds were leaving the early Tuesday night curtains at the Broadway shows.
