Arguably, if there’s one thing the world could use today, (or at least the theater-going public of Chicago), it’s a hero. And it looks like that big, green, gentle giant of an ogre, Shrek, will soon fill the bill.

As a pre-launch sneak peek at Shrek The Musical, some of the creative folks behind the Broadway production showed up at the Cadillac Palace Theatre to whet Chicago’s appetite for this popular book , movie series, and now, musical.

Drawing aside the curtain on their creative process, they explained how they translated the animated film into a musical. “Heart and humor, not just music,” they said were at the core of the story. They wanted to be sure that Shrek The Musical would have the right stuff to appeal to a grandparent or a twelve-year old.

So, the theme of how the world sees us on the outside and how we are on the inside became the focus of Shrek’s epic journey. With a couple of songs by two of the New York cast, some film clips of costumes, makeup, and scenes from the show, the audience at the Cadillac Theatre enthusiastically put on their souvenir Shrek ear headbands and posed for their photo.

After all, what could be better to anticipate than a glad tale in which an unlikely hero vanquishes evil, protects the helpless, and gets the girl?

Shrek The Musical will begin its limited engagement as part of the Broadway In Chicago series on July 13, 2010.
