I happened to be visiting my father, Paul, in Charlton, Massachusetts, and we went out for a Sunday afternoon dinner to Vienna Restaurant & Historic Inn, just a three hour trip north, from New York City, near Old Sturbridge Village and Brimfield Antique Show. What a lovely way to spend a fall Sunday! This rare find is a 26 room Italianate Revival home, on the National Historic Register, waiting to cater to guests for a weekend-getaway or special occasion. I had been looking for a different sort of New England dining experience, and here we were, in an elegant dining room, with a real sparkling fireplace, all decorated in New England fall finery.
For appetizers, after Austrian meats, courtesy of the Chef, my father ordered Hungarian Goulash Soup, with beef, onions, vegetables, peppers & paprika, while I chose Wine Marinated Bismarck Herring, with sour cream & lemon. Both servings were quite generous, as were the entrées. My father's main dish was one of his favorites, Hofbraühaus Schlachtplatte, or Smoked pork chop, Brat & Knackwurst, with kraut & spätzle. I was pleased with the Sautéed Fresh Rainbow Trout, a fresh boneless fillet of trout, sautéed in a lemon & butter sauce, topped with toasted almonds. I bought a couple of take-out appetizers for my father to take home, as well, quite different from his usual refrigerator dishes. Needless to say, we could not eat dessert this time, but will pace ourselves differently next time. Our driver returned two hours after we arrived, and we needed the extra time for our tour of the Inn.
Jonathan Krach and our server, Patrick, took us on a tour of the Inn's centuries-old guest rooms, all designed for comfort and escape. On our next trip to Vienna restaurant, I'd like to see more of this Inn and spend some time in the parlor, by another fireplace. In fact, you can stop for tea, coffee, or cocktails, in the parlor, or even dine with intimate couches and tables. Vienna Restaurant & Historic Inn is the perfect destination for weekend Holiday excursions, or a romantic getaway for two. Call 508.764.0700 or 866.2.VIENNA, and ask for Jonathan or Lisa Krach. Tell him you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
