I have sailed Manhattan by Sail's Shearwater Classic Schooner on many memorable occasions, but tonight was my first experience on their newly refurbished, historical Tall Ship, called Clipper City. We sailed from South Street Seaport at 7:00 PM and returned at 9:00 PM, and I felt like I'd been on an adventurous vacation. The Tall Ship is 158 feet long, with masts and rigging reaching to 120 feet from the water. When we sailed beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, I thought we almost touched its historic steel, but, I learned, there was a huge difference in height, not visible from the Ship.
The muscular and athletic crew made the experience exciting, watching them climb and jump about the Ship, hoisting and dropping the several sails and chatting with the numerous passengers, from all over the globe. South Street Seaport houses many restaurants, from casual Food Court booths to elegant upper-level restaurants with a view. In fact, there was a crowd sitting at the ship's docking area, just watching it arrive and depart, a magnificent sight. The trip was smooth, and views of the Statue of Liberty at sunset were spectacular.
Call the Clipper City office at 212.619.0907, and reserve space for you and your friends on their Daytime, Sunset, or Harbor Lights Sails. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
