I was recently in Chicago, late March, for my brother's birthday weekend. I stayed at Intercontinental Chicago Magnificent Mile on North Michigan Avenue, and we took in all the local sights, in spite of a Friday night-Saturday mixture of snow. We were hardy revelers, and Saturday night's plan included Broadway in Chicago's Billy Elliot, the Musical at Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre, at 24 W. Randolph. The Gage Chicago, at 24 South Michigan, between Monroe and Madison (scouted out by my family in Chicago, as part of our detailed logistical preparation), could not have been more perfect.
The Gage décor was a mix of Oriental splendor (perfect for the evening plan at the Oriental Theatre) and Americana antique. Bottom line, this was the lush life, with a lively ambiance and warm, attentive staff. Billy Lawless, Proprietor at The Gage Chicago, even greeted us himself and took time to check on our orders, as we were on a theatre schedule. My pink Cosmo was perfect, as was Susan's Vodka Martini. My own entree was Seared Hawaiian Big Eye Tuna with Chestnut, Basil, White Beans, and Fried Chilies. A shared side dish, which was a meal in itself, was a pot of Brussel Sprouts and Hot Brie, with Applewood Bacon. Barry, the birthday guy, had a very man-sized Natural Aged American Rib-eye, with Sheep's Milk Blue and Port Poached Figs, with a side of Roasted Organic Potatoes. Jessie, my vegetarian niece, loved her custom-made, Risotto, with Winter Vegetables and Grana Padano. Susan, who, like me, loves fish, ordered the Door County Whitefish Rutabaga, with Walnuts, Celery, Spinach, and Cinnamon Butter Vinaigrette.
Jessie, a longtime chocolate fan, was delighted with her Flourless Chocolate Cake with Citrus and Vanilla Ice Cream. On our way out the door, Billy Lawless and Dirk Flanigan, The Gage Chicago Executive Chef, greeted us yet again. On your next trip to Chicago, or if you're lucky to live in the area, be sure to reserve a table at The Gage Chicago. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com!
