Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower May 23, 2008
On a clear, warm, sunny morning in May, I returned to Fleet Week, on the Hudson River, as my last Fleet Week excursion was in 2005. Today I was escorted by two warm, informative Navy Officers, LT Jennifer Zeldis, a Public Affairs Officer, usually stationed in Washington, DC, and Deirel Negrin, a Petty Officer, assigned to the USS Kearsage.
The tour photos are below, with the interior of the USS Kearsage, its upper walkways, the dining area, hospital section, touring visitors, assigned sailors and officers, and even an ensemble of sailors on the upper deck, taping a segment for the June 15, 2008 TONY Awards. This time around, I decided to take in the ambiance and enjoy the experience, taking notes only in a brief interview with Officer Negrin. I should say that in seeing these Navy personnel, so strong, positive, and energetic, we should all be proud and grateful for their unwavering dedication and generous spirit toward our safety and the well-being of our country.
Officer Deirel Negrin arrived in the US from Cuba in 1997 and moved to Miami. After two years, he joined the Navy, while his sister became a nurse. Deirel’s mother remained in Cuba. Deirel found that the Navy offered him the opportunity to travel and to study technology in online courses. Deirel was assigned to the USS Enterprise with a crew of 5,000, from 2001-2005. He was able to travel to Spain, Mallorca, Portugal, France, and Greece. The ship was even docked on the French Riviera. However, after September 11, 2001, the ship turned around and headed toward the Gulf and the port of Dubai. Deirel had specialized in the maintenance and physical readiness tests of the aircraft carrier.
In 2005, Deirel was assigned to the USS Kearsage, whose home port is Norfolk, Virginia, and the ship traveled to Malta, near Sicily, until 2007. Deirel’s mother is still in Cuba, and his father is alone now in Miami. Deirel is switching his studies to nursing, like his sister, and he plans to take a break at some point to care for his ailing parents. It was an honor to spend this morning with LT Jennifer Zeldis and Petty Officer Deirel Negrin. I look forward to Fleet Week 2009. The photos of this morning are below.
