Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises introduced and christened the new "M/V Circle Line Manhattan", which is the first new cruise boat in Circle Line's renowned fleet. A Naming Ceremony was enhanced by the Maritime College Regional Band, which created musical marches and flourishes to welcome VIP guests and dignitaries to this historical event. Among the VIP guests were Lise Stolt-Nielsen, who welcomed the invitation-only crowd, Bill Evans, an ABC meteorologist, who was today's Master of Ceremony, George Fertita, CEO & President, NYC & Company, Robert E. Maher, CEO, New York Cruise Lines, and Christine Quinn, NYC Council Speaker. Each of these VIP guests spoke with pride and awe of this exceptional new cruise boat and of this exceptional event.
David Rozanek of the United States Coast Guard was today's Chaplain, and Whoopi Goldberg, star of film and television, was honored as Godmother of the "M/V Circle Line Manhattan". Ms. Goldberg spoke about her childhood in New York, riding the Circle Line with her family and making those excursions her mini-vacations in the summertime. She also participated in the ribbon-cutting and the breaking of the champagne bottle against the "Manhattan", which were the official naming exercises. Peter Duclos, President of Gladding Hearn, presented a special gift bag to Ms. Goldberg, and the Band played "Farewell" at the end of the ceremony.
At this point, guests boarded the World Yacht's "Princess" for a Gala Buffet Lunch, and then they boarded the brand new ribbon-bedecked "M/V Circle Line Manhattan" for a Cruise to the Statue of Liberty and a tour of New York Harbor. The "M/V Circle Line Manhattan" holds 600 passengers with added visibility and is made entirely of steel. The 165-foot vessel represents a modern version of a very traditional and functional vessel design. (Circle Line Notes)
