I joined Sylvia Lima, General Manager, New Yorker Hotel, along with her colleagues, as they presented the New Yorkie Runway Fashion Show. The New Yorker Hotel is an official hotel for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which will unfold at Madison Square Garden, next door. The Runway Fashion Show's hosts were David Frei, Co-Host of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and Elly McGuire, the owner of Schmitty the Weather Dog, who has his own blog. This special event, held in one of the New Yorker's elegant spaces, began with a cocktail party and a red carpet photo opportunity for all the guests and their fashion-bedecked pets. The New Yorkie fashion line was enhanced with a fantasy purple sky and midnight mood, a fantasy taxi, and a piano in taxi motif. Many of the dogs seen tonight would compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in a few days, so this was a great rehearsal for spotlights and adoring attention.
Celebrities, like Miss USA and Ron Trotta, Meteorologist, who features Schmitty as his Weather Dog, during the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, were prominently showcased in the Pre-Runway Show, Red Carpet event. The entire evening was a benefit for Angel on a Leash, a non-profit that brings "therapy dogs" to health care and correctional facilities, to uplift moods and "make people smile". Following the Red Carpet event was a Runway Show, and prominent New Yorkers, plus celebrity dog-owners, had a great time gliding up and down the green carpeted runway, with their frisky, fashionable pets, to the delight of this dog-adoring audience.
Seen at tonight's event were Celeste Holm, legendary actress, with Frank Basile, opera star, who also sang the National Anthem, and Ms. Holm's dog, Barker. There were canine fashions, canine gold jewelry, and canine-inspired accessories for sale in New Yorker's Mezzanine Lobby. Additional sponsors of the New Yorkie Runway included Prudential Douglas Elliman and TD Bank.
