A lively and informative reception was held tonight at The Algonquin. The American National Theatre (A.N.T.) brought its Board and Staff to the Algonquin lobby for wine, cheese, passed hors d’oeuvres, crudités, and an introduction to two plays by Mark Harelik, called The Immigrant and The Legacy. The respective Directors, Randal Myler and Laird Williamson, greeted the guests to introduce these works. Also greeting guests, including subscribers and donors to American National Theatre, were Sean Cullen, tonight’s Host, A.N.T. Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Mark Rubinsky, Board President, Scott Williams, Board Member, and Christian Borle and Kathleen Chalfant, renowned actors and Co-Chairs of this evening. Three Juilliard musicians serenaded the guests before the speeches and readings.

Mark Harelik’s The Immigrant was previewed by Director, Randal Myler, then in readings by Kathleen Chalfant and Dakin Matthews, as husband and wife, and Richard Topol, as the immigrant, negotiating a room rental in their home. The conversation was compelling and poignant, fully in character, and I look forward to following this production to its next level. Mr. Harelik’s The Legacy was next, previewed by Director, Laid Williamson, then in readings by Kathleen Chalfant, Jacqueline Antamarian, Richard Topol, and Russell Posner. Like The Immigrant, the setting is in Texas, and there’s a theme of Jewish heritage and legacy, cultural challenges and identity. Both casts drew me in, and, again, I look forward to checking in on these productions at their next level.
