Tonight, I traveled to Greenwich Village for a late set of jazz at Cachaca Samba and Jazz Club on West 8th Street. Before the jazz, the perfect nearby Village trattoria is Monte's, on MacDougal Street, between West 3rd Street and Bleeker. This restaurant has been in existence since 1918, and the Mosconi family, also owners of Villa Mosconi, a few doors down, on Bleeker, keeps guests happy, satisfied, and ready to return. Chef, Pietro Mosconi, was awarded the 2005 Chef of the Year, by Chefs de Cuisine Association of America. Dozens of framed photos of renowned Monte's guests line the fascinating walls.
My guest and I dined on fresh Tri-Colore Salad, home-made Egglant Parmigiana, hot from the oven, and Portobello Mushrooms in balsamic sauce. The ambiance was busy, energetic, warm, and friendly. Peter Mosconi, our waiter, did a fine job of explaining the menu and assisting our choices. Due to the Jazz schedule, we had to postpone dessert to the next visit, but the cappuccinos were frothy and steaming. Stop by Monte's, before or after Greenwich Village theatre, jazz, or shopping, and ask for Pietro Mosconi. Tell him you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
